Instruction given to players which directs how to engage with the diegetic or game world. May be direct or mediated, and refer to mechanical or narrative instructions to steer interaction. Rule documents for events may outline who can issue directives, and outline the meaning of pre-agreed set directive calls which can be used for mechanical, narrative or safety purposes.

Example(s)

  • Players may be given direct mechanical instructions from a referee to deduct health points in response to an encounter.
  • A written card may provide characters with mediated narrative instructions about the appearance of their environment, e.g "This storeroom is painted yellow"
