Mechanics are ludic systems of rules to constrain game actions and simulate specific types of interaction with the game world. They may enable characters to manifest skills which may not match player’s real world capacities, or restrain player agency. Mechanics may provide diegetic direction or ludic constraints such as principles for resolving conflict through direct combat. Mechanics may intentionally be designed to reward specific achievements such that some player characters have greater advantage.
