The hand-in-air technique is a widely used hand signal in a variety of UK larp communities to indicate non-participation in the diegetic or game world. Most frequently, a hand held completely upright indicates complete disengagement from interaction with the activity to the degree that characters engaging in larp activity will treat them as if they are entirely invisible. Some uses of the technique are similar to the use of a hands crossed across the chest signal to convey invisibility in the Mind's Eye Theatre rule system.
